a woman, the one adorning
zhuàng — gives the sounda split plank, the left half of a board
Tzhuàng → zhuāng — the plank-sound levelled
A woman (女) making herself up — to adorn. The sound carries two tellings: 爿 zhuàng, the split board on the left (the phonetic under 壯、牀), levelled to zhuāng; or 裝省, 裝 written short, the dress-up word abbreviated to its left edge. Either way it points to painting and dressing the face, then the look it produces: 化妝、妝扮、梳妝.
