字源 FORM — what the parts do

a mountain — the walls on either side
jiá — gives the sounda big person (大) with two small ones tucked under the arms — squeezed between
Mountains (山) on both sides, squeezing (夾) the water through a narrow throat — a gorge. 夾 carries the sound jiá, close to xiá, and its picture, a figure pressed on both sides, is the gorge itself. On water it gives 海峽, a strait. As a sound-piece 夾 builds 狹、挾、俠.
