Grass (艸) and sun (日) with 屯 tún for the sound — a seedling forcing through the ground. Sun warms the soil and the shoots push up: spring (艸春時生). The season of sprouting becomes spring itself — 春天 — and from sprouting, youth and vitality: 青春、春意. Centuries of copying wore 艸 and 屯 together into the flat top; only 日 stayed whole below.
