朋 carries two tellings. In the old script it is two strings of cowrie shells hung together — a matched pair, the value-unit 朋; or it is the flock that follows the 鳳 bird in its thousands, companions in a crowd. Either way: things of a kind, ranked side by side. From the matched pair comes friend, companion — 朋友 — and a band of the like-minded, 朋黨.
