A tree (木) over 甘, the mouth tasting sweet-sour — the old word for a plum or sour fruit. That fruit-word was borrowed away to mean a certain unnamed one: 某人, 某天. The fruit sense left; the placeholder stayed. As a sound 某 still seeds 謀 móu, 媒 méi.
