字源 FORM — what the parts do
A man stops, mouth open and panting (欠). The old graph carries two tellings: the two strokes are 二 lending its sound, or flecks flying from the open mouth. The one who halts drops back a place — second, the next in line; and each halt counts as a time: 一次.
