獸
獸 = 嘼 + 犬
ㄕㄡˋ · shòu
noun — a beast, a wild animal
字源 FORM — what the parts do
嘼聲shòu — gives the sounda forked hunting weapon over a mouth (口) — the gear of the hunt, not a character the student meets alone; carries the sound, an exact shòu match
犬義a dog (犬, on the right)the hunting dog
The left is 嘼 — a forked hunting weapon over a mouth (口), the gear and the catch — and the right is the dog (犬) that runs the hunt down: 守備者, to guard the ground and take the game. The old graph carries two tellings of 嘼: one reads it as the sound (嘼聲, an exact shòu match); the other reads the whole as a picture, hunting-gear and hound set side by side. The graph first meant the hunting itself; what is hunted, the wild animal, took the name: 野獸、猛獸、獸性.
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
一把獵叉、一張口(嘼),配上一條獵狗(犬)——圍捕到的,就叫獸。
A hunting fork, a mouth (嘼), and a hound (犬) alongside — what the hunt rings in is the beast.
