The jade-side (玉) marks a fine stone; 鬼 guǐ on the right gives the sound, only the tone lifting to guī. 瑰 named a rose-coloured gem, and from a stone too rare to be ordinary came the sense marvellous, extraordinary — 瑰寶、瑰麗. It pairs with 玫 to name the flower: 玫瑰.
