noun — a counting marker, numeral, code
字源 FORM — what the parts do
A stone (石) with 馬 mǎ for the sound, exactly. The graph carries two tellings: a patterned stone, agate (碼瑙), the named stone narrowing to a small marked piece — a counting chip; or stones laid down bare as a tally, one set down for each thing counted. Either way it lands on the counting marker: a counter (籌碼), then a number (號碼), then a code (密碼、代碼).
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
一顆石頭(石)放下,算一個;馬(馬)在旁念著數——碼。
One stone (石) down, that's one counted; 馬 sounds the count beside it.
