字源 FORM — what the parts do

林聲lín — gives the soundtwo trees, a grove

A grove (林) over the altar (示) — the sacred wood where the spirits forbid trespass. The original sense is the prohibition laid down by the divine; from there, to forbid anything: 禁止, 禁菸. Read jīn, it turns inward — to bear, to withstand: 禁不住. 林 carries the sound, worn far from lín.
