字源 FORM — what the parts do
Tzhān → zhàn — only the tone bends
Standing (立) — a person upright on the line of the ground; 占 gives the sound, tone bent to zhàn. Then the stop-and-stand sense met a traveler: on the Yuan post roads, Mongolian jam — the relay post — rode into Chinese as 站, and every 車站、捷運站 descends from it.
