Twéi → wèi — the tone shifted off the donor
The old graph carries two tellings. In one, 韋 — feet pacing around an enclosure — sits inside 行 (a crossroads): a sentry walking his circuit. In the other, 行 holds 韋 plus 帀, the guard-post enclosed and the road around it. Either way: to guard, 保衛. 韋 also gives the sound, worn one tone from wéi. The same 韋 builds 圍、違、緯.
