A robe (衣) under 龍, dragon — but the dragon is a worn 龖, two dragons stacked, cut down to one for writing; it carries the sound, dá worn to xí. The old word is a lined ceremonial robe, one layer pulled over another. From layering came putting on, then carrying on what came before — 沿襲、世襲; and from coming over someone under cover, the surprise raid — 襲擊、空襲.
