Tbiǎn → piàn — tone shifts
A horse (馬), and 扁 — flat, to the side. 扁 biǎn carries the sound, shifted to piàn. The graph first meant to vault sideways onto a horse; from that swift sidewise move came the sense of pulling a fast one — 欺騙, 騙子, to cheat.
